Proverbs 31:13-14 and God’s Will

I love the language in these two verses for the picture they paint in my head.  Per Wikipedia, a merchant vessel is a ship that transports cargo or passengers.  Hmmmm.  When I read that, I pictured a mom with 5 kids and a Cheerio-infested minivan.  Maybe there's something to that.  Then there are the action words:  finds, busily spins, bring.  See a pattern there?  As for wool and flax, they are used to make clothing and other materials.  Flax is most commonly used these days as a superfood.  Flaxseed contains high levels of fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, making it a…read more >

Verse 15 Reflection and Other Stuff

"She gets up before dawn to prepare breakfast for her household and plan the day's work for her servant girls."  Proverbs 31:15 It's confession time.  I love to sleep.  Don't we all?  The inability to sleep late at least once a week was a huge adjustment for me when I became a mother.  I'm a night-owl, therefore I like to make up for any lack of sleep by sleeping in.  After my first son was born, the idea of making up for lost sleep went out the window.  Once my second son was born, I had moved into acceptance mode and we all…read more >

Verse 15

I know, I know, verses 13 and 14.  I'll come back to them.  It is so not my personality to skip around.  If you know me well, you know I am a chronological, linear, follow-the-rules type of person.  But, verse 15 jumped out at me this week, so I'm going to go against the flow here ... for once in my life. Here it is: "She gets up before dawn to prepare breakfast for her household and plan the day's work for her servant girls."  Proverbs 31:15 Okay, so no one has a "servant girl" these days.  At least I…read more >

Verses 11-12 Reflection

Her husband can trust her  .... I think this phrase wraps a lot of meaning into five little words.  My immediate impression was of course my husband can trust me, what's not to trust?  I am completely loyal to him and him alone.  But, it's not just about loyalty.  Can he trust me to run our home efficiently and economically?  Can he trust me to spend money cautiously rather than recklessly?  When he's not here, can he trust that I am spending my time wisely?  Translation, it's probably not okay to watch soap operas and search the Internet all day.  I don't do either of…read more >

Proverbs 31, Verses 11-12

Here are the next two verses from Proverbs 31: "Her husband can trust her, and she will greatly enrich his life.  She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life."  Seems pretty straightforward, doesn't it? Out of curiousity, I looked up the King James Version of these verses and thought it was helpful in clarifying the intention of the passage.  "The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life." Definitions for clarification: Enrich:  to supply with riches, wealth, abundant or valuable possessions; to add greater value or significance to…read more >

Verse 10 Reflection

I apologize for not posting when I said I would ... because I know you are all on pins and needles wondering when the next blog entry is coming.  Joking.  But, I actually do have guilt over being late with this.  So, to avoid any further guilt, I'm going to retract any previous statements concerning a timeframe for posting.  I do promise to finish what I've started!  That reminds me of a song/scripture that we used to sing in church, "For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it…read more >

Verse 10: The Virtuous Woman

I will admit that I after I hit "share" last week on my blog post, I wondered if I had gotten in over my head and I hoped that I would be able to keep up my end of the deal .... blogging each week is a big committment for me!  So, here it goes.  I am not an expert on The Bible, Proverbs or even this chapter.  I am highly unqualified to author a blog on this subject, but my intention is to keep it simple and call it like my heart sees it.  Disclaimers aside, the plan is to post the…read more >

The P31 Woman

I have read Proverbs 31 many times, but lately it has been brought to the forefront of my mind.  Facebook friends refer to it frequently and it has been the topic of several recent conversations.  Obviously the Lord has called this to my attention, not just because it has popped up here and there, but because I can't stop thinking about it.  I firmly believe that the Lord speaks to us in a variety of ways, and when I can't shake a "God thought", I know it's Him.  Thank goodness he doesn't let me dismiss His will and desire for my life! Honestly, things…read more >
